Becoming a non-profit

The Hanged Man is becoming an official Swedish non-profit association called The Hanged Man Club, whose purpose is to support, promote, and facilitate creative fan communities and collaborative projects! The paperwork will be done by August 30th, submitted early September, and hopefully be official soon thereafter!

The mods of The Hanged Man also overlap with Dragon Age Annual (DAA). Each year that charity project becomes more difficult to operate without being a formal entity. After reviewing how Swedish non-profits work — and how easy they are to establish — it made more sense to form the organization one level above DAA, rather than at the DAA-level.

By making The Hanged Man Club a non-profit , we can:

  • consolidate infrastructure (file server, modding docs, etc.) between DAA and our other events
  • support affiliated projects without absorbing them
  • share resources like website templates, server space, and newsletter tools with aligned projects

There’s very little! Swedish non-profits are wonderfully straightforward. They require:

  • one board member living in Sweden
  • at least two additional board members
  • one formal public board meeting per year (a Discord text chat counts)

There’s no fee to file the paperwork. Members of the club do not have to pay dues, and The Hanged Man Club itself has no need to handle money.

Will anything change in The Hanged Man server or associated events like Arlathan eXchange, DA Polyshipping, or DAA?

Section titled “Will anything change in The Hanged Man server or associated events like Arlathan eXchange, DA Polyshipping, or DAA?”

Yes and no.

Yes: Technically, you are all members of The Hanged Man Club in the year you participate in an event or DAA. You’re also a member if you’re a member of The Hanged Man Discord server. (Please note: There are two. Ours was established in 2019 and has been running ever since. The other was established more recently. Membership only comes from participation in the server established in 2019, currently owned by enigmalea.)

As members, you can attend our yearly board meeting, ask questions and add topics to the agenda. You could also ask us to hold an additional meeting outside of the required yearly one. You may see announcements for meetings and are welcome to attend (or ignore them) at your leisure. We are simply required to have them publicly and allow everyone to attend if they wish to. Meetings will be announced two weeks before they are to take place.

In addition, other projects may become associated with The Hanged Man Club over time.

No: Other than being invited to attend meetings, your day-to-day experience in our events and publications will remain the same. This simply formalizes our legal standing and gives us an ability to act as an organization rather than individuals simply doing good deeds.

The Founding Meeting announcement is coming in a few hours today. Until then, we’d like to thank you all for your support, and can’t wait to continue on this exciting new adventure with us.
